ABSTRACT:

Developing Digital Literacy and Academic Writing through Themed Multimodal Projects

The shift to remote instruction in response to COVID-19 has given us the opportunity to reflect on how best practices in online teaching can enhance our curriculum more broadly once we return to in person classes. One practice worth transferring to all modalities is the incorporation of multimodal texts into the writing classroom. Multimodal texts and projects lead to a greater awareness of audience and genre not only within an academic context, but also in digital spaces, which is essential for professional communication across disciplines. Furthermore, multimodal activities engage diversity of learning styles and abilities by incorporating visual and audio elements to further contextualize text. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of the pedagogical rationale for including multimodal projects, guidelines for project development, and detailed examples of activities and assessments
